The photo shoot started in the makeup trailer. A row of models with the lines of their “Sassy arms” drawn in had lipstick and eyeliner applied as they stared into the mirror with blank expressions. Summer leaned against the counter, smiling widely as she had in the earlier picture.

They moved outside and did another shoot at a coffeehouse near the trailers, with tables out front filled with Sassy doll models. Summer Z pretended to sip a latte with a heart made of foam. They took more pictures of the models posed in front of the graffiti wall like mannequins in a store window. Summer wore a similar dress as the others but looked more like a modern young woman enjoying a stroll through the city as she grinned with perfectly lacquered lips for the camera.

Later in the day, Jules rode in a limousine with GoGo toward the next arranged location, the Museum of Modern Art. And she could barely concentrate on where they were going. Her head rushed with too many thoughts.

This is real. She was taking photos of one of the most famous women in the world for an advertising campaign, photos she would be paid for as a professional photographer. It felt like a dream, except for the fact that she was working and so many decisions were being required of her. She was too exhausted for it to be sheer fantasy. She should have sent another text to Caleb sooner, but she wasn’t even sure where he was or if he was off his plane. She pulled out her phone.

There was no reply to her first text yet, but she sent him another.

You’re not going to believe this. I did a real professional photography shoot. And you won’t believe with who. I know you’re busy, but text me when you get the chance.

She couldn’t wait to see him again, to see his face when she told him in person. Jules leaned back and sighed.

She was really doing it. She was creating. Her life had completely changed, and her greatest dream had come true. It would be tough to go back to Bergstrom after this and resume her life as a corporate drone. But she couldn’t think about that, at least not until she finished the shoot.

It was almost hard for her to admit it, like indulging in hubris would jinx it all, but she felt like a natural at this. Jules had taken classes on photography and had taken pictures for years, but she didn’t compare her knowledge to that of a true professional. But there was something about it that felt so right. She could see the shots in her head before she took them and knew exactly what she wanted in a way that made Summer’s snooty art director seem to appreciate her talents. And the marketing people from the company seemed delighted with the photos, too. They grabbed the memory sticks from her camera like they were made of gold, snatching them away as assistants passed her new ones.
